About Me

Hi, I’m Autumn—and I’ve been where you are.

I’ve lived in a larger body for most of my life, and I know the frustration of being judged, dismissed by doctors, and blamed for every health concern. I also know the emotional rollercoaster of dieting—the hope, the rules, the burnout, and the shame when it doesn’t work (again).

Even after bariatric surgery, I didn’t find the lasting change I was hoping for. That’s when I started digging deeper—and what I found changed everything: obesity isn’t a personal failure. It’s complex, and it’s not just about willpower or food choices.

That realization led me to become a certified Life, Health, and Nutrition Coach. Now, I help others break free from guilt and shame and build a new relationship with their health—one rooted in compassion, not punishment.

I follow the Health at Every Size® (HAES®) philosophy, which means I focus on respectful care, joyful movement, and sustainable well-being—not the number on a scale. My work blends nourishment for the mind, body, and spirit so you can feel strong, capable, and at peace in your body.

If you're ready to ditch the diet cycle and try something different, I’d be honored to support you. You deserve a life that feels good—inside and out.

The Fixed Mindset

Hello friends!

In today’s post, I want to dive a little deeper into the concept of a fixed mindset—something I’ve personally struggled with and learned so much about over time. Recognizing this mindset within ourselves is the first step toward real personal growth, and I’m excited to explore what a fixed mindset looks like, how to spot those limiting thoughts, and, most importantly, how we can overcome them.

What Is a Fixed Mindset?

A fixed mindset is the belief that our abilities and intelligence are predetermined traits. It’s the idea that we’re born with a set amount of talent that can’t really change. When we’re caught in this mindset, we tend to avoid challenges and shy away from risks because we fear failure and worry about not measuring up.

I’ve found that when we’re trapped in a fixed mindset, we often become more focused on proving ourselves than on improving ourselves. I know from experience that when I was struggling with this mindset, setbacks felt like clear signs of my limitations instead of opportunities for growth. I became discouraged, thinking if I couldn’t succeed immediately, it was better to give up than to keep trying. This kind of thinking stifles creativity and keeps us stuck in our comfort zones, unable to reach our true potential.

Signs of a Fixed Mindset

The first step in overcoming a fixed mindset is recognizing when those limiting thoughts pop up. Here are a few signs to watch out for:
    1.    Fear of Challenges: Do you avoid difficult tasks or new experiences because     you're afraid of failing?
    2.    Negative Self-Talk: When faced with challenges, do you quickly think, “I’m just     not good at this”?
    3.    Ignoring Feedback: Do you brush off constructive criticism or become     defensive when others offer suggestions?
    4.    Staying in Your Comfort Zone: Do you stick with what you already know,     avoiding anything that feels uncertain or unfamiliar?
    5.    Feeling Threatened by Others’ Success: Do you find it hard to celebrate others'     achievements, perhaps seeing their success as a reflection of your own     shortcomings?
If any of these sound familiar, it might be a sign that a fixed mindset is at play.

Shifting to a Growth Mindset

Now that we’ve identified some key traits of a fixed mindset, let’s talk about how we can shift our thinking and start embracing a growth mindset. This shift doesn’t always come easily, but with time and practice, it can completely transform the way we approach life’s challenges. Here are some practical tips that have helped me on this journey:

    1.    Embrace Challenges: Start small by taking on challenges that feel manageable.     The goal isn’t just to succeed—it’s to celebrate your efforts and the learning     process. Every challenge brings valuable lessons.
    2.    Reframe Failure: Instead of seeing failure as a setback, try to view it as a     stepping stone. Reflect on what you can learn from each experience and how it     brings you closer to your goals.
    3.    Seek Feedback: Rather than avoiding criticism, actively ask for it. Approach     feedback as a valuable tool for personal and professional growth.
    4.    Practice Self-Compassion: Be gentle with yourself when things don’t go as     planned. Remember, growth takes time. Treat yourself with the same kindness you     would offer a close friend in a similar situation.
    5.    Set Learning Goals: Instead of focusing solely on performance, set goals     around learning and improvement. This shifts your focus from proving yourself to     growing yourself.
    6.    Surround Yourself with Growth-Minded People: Find people who inspire and     challenge you. Their positive mindset and resilience will encourage you to adopt the     same perspective.
    7.    Reflect on Your Progress: Regularly take a moment to reflect on how far you’ve     come. Celebrate the steps you’ve taken, the lessons you’ve learned, and the     personal growth you’ve experienced.

Final Thoughts

Overcoming a fixed mindset is a journey, and it’s one that takes time and patience. By recognizing those limiting thoughts and intentionally shifting your perspective, you open yourself up to new opportunities and possibilities for growth.

I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your own mindset. How can you begin your journey toward embracing a growth mindset? In my next post, I’ll explore the power of a growth mindset and how it can fuel both personal and professional development. I’ll also share practical tips for cultivating this empowering perspective in your own life.

Thank you so much for joining me on this path—I’m truly excited to continue this journey with you!
