About Me

Hi, I’m Autumn—and I’ve been where you are.

I’ve lived in a larger body for most of my life, and I know the frustration of being judged, dismissed by doctors, and blamed for every health concern. I also know the emotional rollercoaster of dieting—the hope, the rules, the burnout, and the shame when it doesn’t work (again).

Even after bariatric surgery, I didn’t find the lasting change I was hoping for. That’s when I started digging deeper—and what I found changed everything: obesity isn’t a personal failure. It’s complex, and it’s not just about willpower or food choices.

That realization led me to become a certified Life, Health, and Nutrition Coach. Now, I help others break free from guilt and shame and build a new relationship with their health—one rooted in compassion, not punishment.

I follow the Health at Every Size® (HAES®) philosophy, which means I focus on respectful care, joyful movement, and sustainable well-being—not the number on a scale. My work blends nourishment for the mind, body, and spirit so you can feel strong, capable, and at peace in your body.

If you're ready to ditch the diet cycle and try something different, I’d be honored to support you. You deserve a life that feels good—inside and out.

The Growth Mindset

Hello again, friends!

After diving into the idea of a fixed mindset in my last post, I’m excited to explore its opposite today: the growth mindset. If you’ve been following along, you already know that moving away from a fixed mindset is a powerful step toward personal growth. But what does it really mean to embrace a growth mindset, and how can it change the way we approach life’s challenges? Let’s dive in and explore that today!

What Is a Growth Mindset?

A growth mindset is the belief that our abilities and intelligence can evolve over time with effort, dedication, and perseverance. Unlike the fixed mindset, which assumes our talents are set in stone, the growth mindset embraces the idea that we can improve by learning from our experiences and pushing ourselves beyond what we thought was possible.

Personally, adopting a growth mindset has been a game-changer for me. Instead of viewing setbacks as failures, I now see them as chances to grow and improve. Challenges aren’t something to avoid; they’re an exciting opportunity to stretch my limits and gain new skills.

Key Traits of a Growth Mindset

When we embrace a growth mindset, we begin to see the world—and ourselves—in a different light. Here are some key traits of a growth mindset that can help guide you on this path:
    1.    Embracing Challenges: People with a growth mindset don’t shy away from     difficult situations. Instead of seeing challenges as obstacles, they view them as     opportunities to learn and grow.
    2.    Perseverance in the Face of Setbacks: Setbacks are inevitable, but they aren’t     seen as failure. Those with a growth mindset are resilient, learning from mistakes     and adjusting their approach rather than giving up.
    3.    The Power of Yet: A key phrase in the growth mindset is the word “yet.” Instead     of saying, “I can’t do this,” someone with a growth mindset says, “I can’t do this     yet.” This shift in language opens up endless possibilities.
    4.    Lifelong Learning: Growth-minded individuals understand that learning doesn’t     stop once we leave school or reach a certain career stage. There’s always room for     improvement and development.
    5.    Seeing Effort as the Path to Mastery: People with a growth mindset recognize     that hard work and practice are essential to mastery. They understand that the     process of learning and improving is just as valuable as the end result.

How to Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Now that we know what a growth mindset is, let’s talk about how we can actively cultivate it in our own lives. Here are some steps that have helped me make this shift:
    1.    Reframe Your Thoughts: Instead of thinking, “I can’t do this,” try asking     yourself, “How can I improve at this?” When faced with a challenge, focus on the     learning process rather than the outcome. Reframing your thoughts this way helps     reduce the fear of failure.
    2.    Celebrate Effort Over Results: Instead of only celebrating outcomes, make an     effort to celebrate the hard work and progress you’ve made. This reinforces the     idea that growth comes from consistent effort and determination, not just from         achieving results.
    3.    Learn from Criticism: Constructive feedback is a valuable tool for growth.     Instead of taking it personally, view it as a gift that can help you see areas for         improvement. Feedback allows us to refine our skills and gain new insights.
    4.    Embrace the Process, Not Just the Outcome: Growth happens when we focus on     the journey, not just the destination. Try to find joy in the process of learning and     improving, and you’ll likely find that success follows.
    5.    Surround Yourself with Growth-Minded People: The people we spend time with     can have a big impact on our mindset. Surround yourself with others who embrace     growth. Their enthusiasm and resilience can inspire you to take on new challenges     with confidence.
    6.    Take Risks and Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: Growth doesn’t happen in the     comfort zone. Make a conscious effort to take on new challenges, even if they feel       uncomfortable. Each time you do, you’ll build resilience and confidence in your     ability to grow.

The Impact of a Growth Mindset

The impact of a growth mindset is transformative. It helps us push through obstacles, turn failures into learning experiences, and stay motivated in the face of challenges. Whether in our personal lives, careers, or relationships, adopting a growth mindset allows us to see every situation as an opportunity for growth and to develop the skills we need to succeed.

When you truly believe that your abilities can grow with effort, you open yourself up to limitless possibilities. A growth mindset shows us that we’re capable of far more than we might think.

Final Thoughts

Adopting a growth mindset is an ongoing journey. It takes practice, patience, and a willingness to challenge our own thinking. But sometimes, we may believe we have a growth mindset when, in reality, we’re stuck in the illusion of growth—where effort and learning feel like progress, but true transformation isn’t happening.

In my next post, I’ll explore the illusion of a growth mindset—what it is, how to recognize it, and what it takes to move beyond it. I’ll also share personal insights on how shifting my perspective led to real breakthroughs.

Thanks for being on this journey with me! I’m excited to dive even deeper into this powerful mindset with you.
