About Me

Hi, I’m Autumn—and I’ve been where you are.

I’ve lived in a larger body for most of my life, and I know the frustration of being judged, dismissed by doctors, and blamed for every health concern. I also know the emotional rollercoaster of dieting—the hope, the rules, the burnout, and the shame when it doesn’t work (again).

Even after bariatric surgery, I didn’t find the lasting change I was hoping for. That’s when I started digging deeper—and what I found changed everything: obesity isn’t a personal failure. It’s complex, and it’s not just about willpower or food choices.

That realization led me to become a certified Life, Health, and Nutrition Coach. Now, I help others break free from guilt and shame and build a new relationship with their health—one rooted in compassion, not punishment.

I follow the Health at Every Size® (HAES®) philosophy, which means I focus on respectful care, joyful movement, and sustainable well-being—not the number on a scale. My work blends nourishment for the mind, body, and spirit so you can feel strong, capable, and at peace in your body.

If you're ready to ditch the diet cycle and try something different, I’d be honored to support you. You deserve a life that feels good—inside and out.

The Illusion of a Growth Mindset

Hello again, dear readers!

I’m so glad you’re back! In my previous posts, we’ve explored the concepts of the fixed mindset and the growth mindset—two powerful ways of thinking that shape how we approach challenges, learn from setbacks, and ultimately grow. Embracing a growth mindset can truly be a game changer, but what happens when we think we’ve adopted this mindset—only to realize that we might still have some blind spots?

In today’s post, I want to dive into a tricky concept: the illusion of a growth mindset. It’s when we believe we’re fully embracing growth, but our behaviors and thoughts still reflect some underlying limitations. So, how can we distinguish between a true growth mindset and the illusion of one? Let’s explore this together!

What Is the Illusion of a Growth Mindset?

The illusion of a growth mindset happens when we think we’ve adopted a growth-oriented perspective, but we’re still holding on to certain beliefs or habits that actually reflect a fixed mindset. In other words, we may be going through the motions of growth—taking on new challenges, practicing perseverance, or seeking feedback—but we might not be fully embodying the mindset that allows us to grow in a deeper, more transformative way.

For example, we might challenge ourselves by taking on something new, but we’re focused more on the end result than on the process of learning. Or, we might talk about “loving failure” as a way to grow, but deep down, we still get discouraged when things don’t go as planned. The illusion of a growth mindset can feel like we’re making progress, but we may not be fully engaging with the core principles of growth.

Signs You Might Be Trapped in the Illusion of Growth Mindset

So, how do you know if you’re stuck in this illusion? Here are some signs to look out for:

    1.  Perfectionism Under the Guise of “Learning”: While striving for improvement is        key in a growth mindset, perfectionism can sneak in when we’re not paying           attention. If you find yourself pushing for perfect outcomes or feeling distressed          when you don’t meet an unrealistic standard, you might be more focused on        proving your worth than actually growing.

    2.  Shallow Engagement with Challenges: A true growth mindset sees challenges          as opportunities to learn and evolve. But when we’re caught in the illusion growth        we might only take on challenges that feel safe or that offer small, incremental        progress—avoiding those truly transformative experiences that push us outside of     our comfort zone.
    3.  Failing to Acknowledge the Emotional Side of Failure: Growth is not just about     learning from setbacks, it’s also about embracing the emotions that come with     them. If you tend to dismiss your feelings of frustration or disappointment when     you fail, you might be overlooking the emotional work that is needed for true     growth.
    4.  Seeking Praise for Effort, Not Results: Of course, we should celebrate our effort!     But a growth mindset is about reflecting on the quality of that effort, not just the     amount. If you’re only seeking praise for trying hard but not critically reflecting on     whether that effort is truly leading to progress, you may be stuck in the illusion.
    5.  The “I’m Not Good at This Yet” Trap: It’s great to acknowledge that growth takes     time, but saying “I’m not good at this yet” can sometimes be an excuse to avoid     putting in the real work. It’s not enough to just recognize that you can improve         you also need to actively challenge yourself and ask whether you’re genuinely     progressing.

How to Move Beyond the Illusion of Growth Mindset

If any of these signs feel familiar, don’t worry—it’s completely natural to encounter these blind spots along the way. Recognizing the illusion of a growth mindset is actually the first step toward moving beyond it! Here are some strategies that have helped me get out of this rut and truly embrace a growth mindset:
    1.  Focus on the Process, Not Just the Outcome: Instead of focusing only on the     progress you’re making, reflect on how you’re approaching the process itself. Are     you fully engaged in learning, even if you don’t succeed right away? Shifting your     focus from the outcome to the journey can help you appreciate the growth     happening along the way.
    2.  Embrace the Emotional Side of Growth: It’s okay to feel frustrated, disappointed,     or even upset when things don’t go as planned. These feelings are a natural part of     the learning process. By acknowledging and sitting with your emotions, you deepen     your ability to grow, both emotionally and intellectually.
    3.  Seek Constructive Criticism, Not Just Praise: It’s easy to fall into the trap of     seeking validation for our efforts. But true growth happens when we actively seek     out feedback that challenges us and helps us improve. Instead of just looking for     praise, ask for constructive criticism that can guide you toward further     development.
    4.  Challenge Yourself in Deeper Ways: If you want to break through the illusion of     growth, you have to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Take on challenges     that truly stretch your abilities—not just the easy ones. By embracing more difficult     challenges, you’ll ensure that your growth is real, not just superficial.
    5.  Reflect on Your Efforts and Progress: Self-reflection is key to true growth. Take     time to regularly evaluate not just what you’ve achieved, but how you’ve been     working toward your goals. Are you truly challenging yourself? Are you learning     from your setbacks? Reflecting on your process helps ensure that you’re making     meaningful progress, not just going through the motions.

The Bottom Line: Growth Requires Real Change

The illusion of a growth mindset is easy to fall into, especially in a culture that celebrates effort and improvement. But true growth isn’t just about trying hard—it’s about actively engaging with challenges, reflecting deeply on our experiences, and pushing ourselves to grow in ways that are uncomfortable but transformative.

By recognizing when we’re falling into the illusion of growth and making the necessary adjustments, we can start experiencing real, lasting change—both personally and professionally. It might not always be easy, but the rewards are absolutely worth it.

I encourage you to take a moment and reflect on your own approach to growth. Are you truly embracing a growth mindset, or are there areas where the illusion might be holding you back? In my next post, I’ll explore how to nurture authentic growth and create lasting change in your life by shifting from superficial effort to real transformation.

Thank you for joining me again on this journey of self-discovery. Let’s continue to grow together!
